When the Bees Move In: A Small Allotment Discovery
There are always surprises on an allotment, but some are more unexpected than others.
One of our fellow plot holders recently went to move some old cardboard from a raised bed, hoping to clear the space for tomatoes. Instead of an empty bed, she uncovered a small colony of bees that had taken up residence beneath the cardboard.
It was a good reminder that a no-dig plot is not just a place for vegetables. It is also habitat.
White-tailed bumblebees on the plot
After a closer look, and with advice from someone connected with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, the bees were identified as white-tailed bumblebees.
These are familiar, useful and generally peaceful garden visitors. They are not usually interested in people and are far more concerned with gathering nectar and pollen, raising the next generation, and getting on with the serious business of being bees.
White-tailed bumblebees are excellent pollinators, so although they may have claimed a corner of the bed, they are also doing valuable work across the allotment — visiting flowers, beans, peas, fruit bushes, tomatoes and plenty more besides.
So perhaps they are not so much squatters as very small tenants paying their rent in pollination.
Why the cardboard mattered
Many of us use cardboard on no-dig beds to suppress weeds, protect soil and help build fertility. But cardboard, mulch and undisturbed corners can also create sheltered places for insects and other wildlife.
That is mostly a good thing.
The lesson here is not “don’t use cardboard”, but rather: lift and clear with care, especially in spring and early summer when bees and other creatures may be nesting.
A raised bed may look quiet from above, but there can be a lot going on underneath.
What to do if bees nest in a bed
The advice in this case was simple: do not disturb them.
If bees have made a nest in a raised bed, the best approach is usually to leave them alone and let them complete their cycle. Bumblebee nests are temporary and normally last only for one season. Once the colony has finished, the bed can be used again.
In the meantime:
- avoid lifting the cardboard or digging near the nest
- give the bees a bit of space
- explain to other plot holders what is happening
- grow the displaced crop somewhere else if possible
- enjoy watching them do their work
In this case, a small sign was placed on the bed asking people not to disturb the nest and explaining that the bees were helping pollinate the plot.
That seems a very allotment-friendly solution.
A slight change of tomato plan
Of course, the tomatoes still need somewhere to go.
That is part of growing. Sometimes the plan changes because of weather, slugs, pigeons, a forgotten tray of seedlings — or, in this case, bees.
But there is something quite pleasing about making room for them. Allotments are productive spaces, but they are also shared spaces. We share them with worms, beetles, birds, fungi, frogs, pollinators and all the other life that makes a garden work.
A bee nest under cardboard is not really a problem. It is a sign that the plot is alive.
Plot notes
This little discovery says a lot about no-dig growing and agroecology. By disturbing the soil less, adding organic matter, and leaving a few quieter corners, we make room for more than just crops.
The bees may have taken temporary possession of a tomato bed, but they will repay the favour many times over by helping with pollination across the plot.
So, for now, the tomatoes can move.
