What Do the Insects on Your Plot Tell Us?
Excerpt
Join us at Lauriston Farm on Saturday 27 June, 11am–1:30pm, for a morning exploring the insects on our plots and what they can tell us about soil, crops, biodiversity and the wider health of the farm ecosystem. Lunch included.
Post body
All insects tell a story — and the insects on our plots can tell us a surprising amount about the health of our growing spaces.
At this time of year, the garden and allotment plots are full of insect life. Some insects are welcome visitors, some make us pause and worry about our crops, and others quietly get on with the essential work of keeping the whole ecosystem in balance.
On Saturday 27 June, from 11am to 1:30pm, there will be a session at the farm looking at what the insects on our plots mean for our growing.
Lunch is included.
Insects are important biological indicators of ecosystem health. They help pollinate crops, recycle nutrients, regulate populations of other organisms, and provide food for birds, mammals and other wildlife. Skylarks, meadow pipits, stonechats, hedgehogs and many other species all depend, directly or indirectly, on healthy insect populations.
Sometimes having “too much” of one insect species can suggest that something is out of balance. But rather than seeing insects simply as pests, this session will look at what they can tell us — and what we can do to support the natural systems around us.
There will be a chance to hear from the people who help monitor insects on the farm, including entomologist David Notton and Huw Pennell from the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, and to ask questions about how to improve the health of your growing space.
There will also be activities for young people, including a bug hunt and a chance to create an insect theatre, telling our own bug story from what we find on the farm.
All young people connected with the farm are invited, including children of allotment holders, volunteers and CSA members.
